What to Do If You Have an Issue With Your Solar System

Experiencing a problem with your solar system? Here's who to contact and what steps to take to get it resolved quickly.

Start with your installer
We're here if you need us

Skylight Lending is your financing company — not your equipment servicer

We handle your agreement and payments. The solar equipment — including installation quality, system performance, and warranty — is the responsibility of your installer.

For any system issues, your installer should always be your first call. If you're unable to reach them or the issue remains unresolved, contact us and we'll do our best to help.

Common System Issues

System Not Producing Energy

If your solar system appears to have stopped producing energy entirely, first check your monitoring app or Home Monitor portal to confirm. Then contact your installer — they can remotely diagnose the issue or dispatch a technician.

Keep in mind that energy production naturally varies by season and weather. Extended cloudy periods or short winter days are normal and do not indicate a malfunction.

Inverter Errors or Alerts

If your inverter is displaying an error code or alert light, note the error message and contact your installer right away. Inverter issues can affect your entire system's output and should be addressed promptly. Do not attempt to reset or service the inverter yourself.

Physical Damage to Panels or Hardware

If you notice cracked panels, damaged wiring, loose mounting hardware, or any physical damage — whether from weather, an accident, or any other cause — contact your installer immediately. Do not attempt to handle damaged electrical components yourself.

If you see exposed wiring or suspect electrical damage, keep a safe distance and contact your installer and a licensed electrician before approaching the area.

Battery System Issues

If your solar system includes a battery and it is not charging, discharging properly, or displaying errors, contact your installer. Battery systems require specialized diagnosis and should only be serviced by a qualified technician.

What to Do Step by Step
01

Check Your Monitoring App

To check your system's production data, log in to your inverter monitoring app — this is the app provided by your installer or inverter manufacturer (such as SolarEdge, Enphase, SMA, or similar). It will show you real-time and historical production data, as well as any alerts or error codes. Note any unusual readings or error messages — this information will be helpful when you contact your installer.

02

Contact Your Installer

Your installer is responsible for the equipment, the installation workmanship, and the equipment warranty. They are your first point of contact for any system issue. When you call, have the following ready:

Description of the issue and when it started
Any error codes or alerts showing on your inverter or app
Photos of any visible damage (if applicable)
Your system details (equipment brand, installation date)
Your installer's contact information was provided at the time of installation. Check your original installation paperwork or welcome materials for their details.
03

Document Everything

While your installer is working to resolve the issue, keep a record of all communications. This will be useful if the issue is not resolved in a timely manner.

Dates and times of calls or emails with your installer
Names of representatives you spoke with
Any commitments made (scheduled visit, repair timeline)
Screenshots of monitoring data or error messages
04

Contact Skylight Lending If the Issue Remains Unresolved

If you have contacted your installer and the issue has not been resolved in a reasonable timeframe, please reach out to us. While we do not service the equipment, we want to know when our customers are experiencing ongoing problems and we will do our best to support you.

Important Reminders

Your payments are still due while the issue is being resolved

A system issue does not automatically pause your financing agreement. Please continue making your regular payments while your installer works to resolve the problem. If you have concerns about your financial obligations, contact us to discuss your situation.

Your installer holds the equipment warranty

The warranty on your solar equipment is provided by your installer and/or the equipment manufacturer — not Skylight Lending. Make sure to reference your warranty documentation when contacting your installer about repairs or replacements.

Act quickly

The sooner you report an issue to your installer, the sooner it can be investigated and resolved. Delays in reporting can sometimes affect warranty coverage timelines.
